What causes glaucoma?
Glaucoma is caused by the eye’s inability to drain fluid effectively. This lack of drainage causes the pressure inside your eye to spike which can result in irreversible damage to the optic nerve.
How is glaucoma harmful to vision?
When your eye pressure rises it can have a harmful effect on the optic nerve, which is located in the back of the eye. This damage to the optic nerve can result in reduced or blurred vision. Over time, this condition may worsen and may eventually cause blindness. While the damage done to the optic nerve is unable to be reversed, proper glaucoma management may prevent further damage from being done to the optic nerve.
Will I go blind from glaucoma?
When left untreated, glaucoma can result in blindness or significantly decreased vision. The earlier that glaucoma is diagnosed, the higher chances are that it can be effectively managed and further damage to the optic nerve prevented.
How is glaucoma detected?
Glaucoma is detected during a comprehensive evaluation of the eye. Once glaucoma is diagnosed in the eye, you will be scheduled for a complete glaucoma evaluation. This will include measuring the pressure in your eye, diagnosing the health of your optic nerve (through an OCT diagnostic test), and a visual field test, as well as a full examination by your doctor. You will also be able to discuss the findings, as well as options for treatments, with your doctor.
